Fiji's The People's Alliance Invites Youth Back for Dialogue

Fiji’s People’s Alliance Opens Dialogue with Disenchanted Youth

The General Secretary of The People’s Alliance, Sila Balawa, has extended a heartfelt invitation to disenchanted youth within the party, encouraging them to engage in an open dialogue following their recent criticisms. In a message aimed at former youth supporters who feel sidelined since the party’s electoral triumph, Balawa emphasized their essential contribution, referring to them as the “engine room” of the party’s success in the 2022 General Election.

Balawa acknowledged the invaluable contributions of young volunteers during the campaign, crediting their hard work for the party’s victory. He recognized that many have expressed feelings of discontent over unfulfilled campaign promises made by candidates who are now government ministers. Despite these concerns, he remains committed to fostering an inclusive atmosphere within the party, assuring that the door is always open for discussions.

“This is the party they helped form. The door is always open to them. They can come in at any time and we can sit down, have a cup of tea or a few bowls of yaqona, and have discussions,” Balawa remarked, underlining his willingness to address the youth’s concerns seriously. He also committed to relaying their grievances to the relevant ministers to ensure prompt attention to their issues.

The importance of youth involvement was further emphasized at a recent annual general meeting, where Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reiterated the need for young voices to influence the party’s future directions. Highlighting that about 70% of Fiji’s voters are young, he stressed their crucial role in determining the party’s success and the future of the nation.

The ongoing efforts within The People’s Alliance demonstrate a renewed focus on reconnecting with the youth, reflecting the party’s dedication to inclusivity. This initiative signifies a broader acknowledgment of the value of youth participation in Fijian politics. As the nation prepares for the 2026 elections, this renewed engagement holds promising prospects for enhanced political representation and active involvement from younger generations, suggesting that governance may become more responsive to the needs and aspirations of its youth in the future.
