Rabuka Backs Kamikamica as Fiji's PA Faces Internal Tensions

Fiji’s People’s Alliance at Crossroads as Deputy Leader Remains Amid Probe

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that Manoa Kamikamica will stay on as the deputy leader of the People’s Alliance party, even after Kamikamica stepped down from his cabinet roles following court actions initiated by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). During the official transition of his responsibilities as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Kamikamica directly transferred duties to Rabuka, who emphasized that the developments are separate from any internal party issues.

Rabuka reaffirmed the party’s strong backing for Kamikamica, a founding member of the People’s Alliance. “He’s still the deputy party leader as far as the party is concerned. We will continue to stand by him,” Rabuka stated, showcasing the party’s commitment to support Kamikamica as he faces the legal challenges ahead.

When inquiries arose regarding the appointment of an acting Deputy Prime Minister, Rabuka clarified that this was unnecessary, citing two existing deputies in that capacity. He also affirmed the government’s choice to seek a judicial review instead of engaging the Judicial Services Commission, underscoring the necessity for due legal process without hasty judgments.

Amid these developments, tensions are surfacing within the People’s Alliance party as dissatisfaction grows among the youth wing. Some former young volunteers have expressed feelings of abandonment after being promised job opportunities during the 2022 General Election campaign. Approximately 60 of these individuals have reported inadequate communication and follow-through from current ministers.

Nonetheless, party general secretary Sila Balawa reassured that the youth wing is still active, highlighting that about 200 young individuals participated in a recent youth annual general meeting in Nadi, which indicates ongoing interest among the youth demographic. Balawa also shared plans to enhance youth engagement through a series of upcoming meetings, beginning in the Northern Division. This initiative demonstrates the People’s Alliance’s commitment to addressing concerns and ensuring that the voices of younger supporters are prioritized as Fiji gears up for the 2026 General Election.

As the People’s Alliance navigates these complex internal challenges and strives to maintain unity and engagement, the leadership is focused on fostering collaboration and supportive governance. By reconnecting with the youth and rebuilding trust, the party may significantly enhance its position in the evolving political landscape, creating a hopeful outlook for their future endeavors.
