Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, reiterated the Fijian government’s commitment to prioritizing health services, infrastructure, and the sugar industry during his recent community visits to Balata College and Nadalei Village in Tavua. Emphasizing that the National Budget is more than just figures, Professor Prasad highlighted its role in creating opportunities, improving essential services, and ensuring inclusivity so no citizen is left falling behind.
The community expressed their concerns about the existing health infrastructure and the sugar industry, seeking greater governmental support to tackle these challenges. Professor Prasad assured the residents that the government is listening attentively and is determined to work collaboratively with communities to address these issues. He underlined the importance of face-to-face consultations to ensure that policies are tailored according to the real needs of the people.
This approach aligns with previous statements and actions taken by the government, as seen during similar meetings with residents and farmers across various regions. Issues such as access to clean drinking water, road conditions, drainage, farming challenges, and the severe problem of illicit drug use have been recurring topics of concern. In past discussions, Professor Prasad noted significant budget allocations for the Ministry of Agriculture to support farmers across the board, along with available subsidies for essential farming products like herbicides and pesticides.
Furthermore, the government has been dedicated to enhancing the capacities of health services, acknowledging that several health centers are in dire need of repair. This initiative is in line with the broader efforts to strengthen law enforcement and the capabilities of the police force as part of tackling community safety concerns.
Professor Prasad has consistently emphasized the need for open communication between the government and citizens, stating that Fiji has seen increased public engagement and freedom in expressing concerns and seeking support. Regular community meetings are planned to maintain a participative approach in decision-making processes, ensuring that the government’s actions are responsive to the people’s needs.
The ongoing community dialogues reflect a government initiative focused on fostering inclusive development that responds to Fijian communities’ needs while paving a hopeful path toward sustainable growth and improved living standards.
