Tourism in Fiji’s Northern Division is facing challenges due to limited airlift options and inadequate airport facilities, particularly in Vanua Levu. Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka highlighted that the absence of larger runways poses a significant hurdle for hotels and community-based tourism operators aiming to draw visitors to the region.

Despite these obstacles, Gavoka expressed optimism about the NaVualiku Tourism Development Project, which he believes will enhance the Northern Division’s share of national tourist arrivals, currently at a mere four percent. He noted, “That is the main challenge here in the North. Our current plan is to upgrade facilities to cater for ATR-72 aircraft in Matei, Savusavu and Labasa. If we can achieve this in the coming years, the North will see a surge in tourism arrivals.”

In addition, Gavoka mentioned that the Vunilagi site is being considered for a future airport that could service Savusavu and accommodate larger aircraft, which would greatly enhance tourism potential in the area. He confirmed that there will be further infrastructure developments linked to the NaVualiku Tourism Project over the next eight years, aimed at improving connectivity and expanding tourism capacity throughout the Northern Division.

These initiatives not only represent a commitment to boosting tourism in Fiji’s Northern Division but also carry the promise of revitalizing local economies and enhancing the region’s attractiveness as a travel destination.
