Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has raised pressing concerns regarding the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in Fiji’s Northern Division. He emphasized the significant gap between current capabilities and the demands of the region, noting that while some enhancements have been made during his recent visits, there are still substantial challenges to be addressed. Tuisawau specifically identified the limited access to essential services such as roads, water supply, electricity, and telecommunications as critical issues.
His evaluations revealed a pressing need for new road constructions, underscoring that much work lies ahead to improve accessibility across the Northern region. “We must work hard to ensure people have better roads and facilities in these provinces,” Tuisawau stated.
In addition, he underscored the importance of continuous planning and budgeting to support ongoing infrastructural improvements. He conveyed to ministry staff, along with representatives from the Fiji Roads Authority and the Water Authority of Fiji, that progress must be visibly marked after each financial year. Tuisawau expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all areas in Fiji experience significant and tangible development.
This urgent call for infrastructure reforms echoes similar sentiments expressed across the nation regarding infrastructure challenges. Previous discussions highlighted the widespread concern among officials about deteriorating road conditions, particularly in maritime areas, which have hindered daily life and limited educational opportunities for many residents. Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has also emphasized the necessity for effective solutions to cater to citizens’ welfare and enhance the economy.
The ongoing infrastructure improvements are not only about meeting immediate needs but also align with the overarching goals of the Tuisawau-led government. Since assuming office, he has championed collaborative efforts with development partners and local communities to ensure that infrastructure projects yield lasting benefits for all Fijians.
As the government continues to prioritize infrastructure enhancements, there is optimism for improved connectivity, safety, and access in rural and underserved regions, potentially paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for the people of Fiji.
