Infrastructure Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has expressed urgent concerns regarding the need for infrastructure improvements in Fiji’s Northern Division. Emphasizing the disparity between current capabilities and requirements, he noted that while there have been some improvements during his visits, the challenges remain substantial. The minister specifically pointed out issues related to limited access to essential services including roads, water supply, electricity, and telecommunications.
His assessments indicated that new road constructions are critically needed, yet he stressed that much more work must be done to enhance access across the Northern region. “We must work hard to ensure people have better roads and facilities in these provinces,” Tuisawau remarked.
Further, he highlighted the necessity for ongoing planning and budgeting to facilitate continuous improvements in basic infrastructure. He has conveyed to ministry staff and representatives from the Fiji Roads Authority and the Water Authority of Fiji that progress must be evident after every financial year. Tuisawau articulated the government’s determination to ensure that all parts of Fiji experience significant and tangible development.
This call for revamped infrastructure efforts resonates with similar discussions surrounding infrastructure challenges throughout Fiji. Previous reports suggested a collective concern among officials regarding poor road conditions in various regions, including the maritime areas, which have affected daily life and access to educational opportunities for many residents. The Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need for effective solutions that cater to the welfare of citizens and bolster the economy.
Beyond just addressing the immediate needs of the regions, the ongoing improvements align with the broader goals of the current government. Since taking office, Ro Filipe Tuisawau has advocated for collaborative efforts with development partners and local communities to ensure that infrastructure projects lead to lasting benefits for all Fijians.
As the government prioritizes infrastructure enhancement, there is hope for improved connectivity, safety, and accessibility, potentially leading to a brighter and more prosperous future for rural and underserved regions in Fiji.
