Fiji’s Nokonoko project stalls on missing EIA screening

The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources has yet to issue a development lease for the Nokonoko Integrated Development project, as the developer has not submitted the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Application. While the developer has fulfilled several crucial conditions for a five-year development lease, including a signed waiver of fishing rights from local qoliqoli owners, payment for the Fishing Rights Impact Assessment, public advertisement of the foreshore development, and a detailed concept plan, the EIA Screening Application remains outstanding.

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of responsible land management and climate-resilient development, noting that adherence to environmental compliance is essential. Various regulatory bodies, including the ministries of Environment and Climate Change and Local Government, are tasked with ensuring that these standards are met. As part of the leasing process, stringent clauses have been incorporated to ensure that the developer rigorously adheres to all EIA conditions during project implementation.

The Ministry’s approach echoes the broader commitment by the Fijian Government to balance economic development with environmental stewardship. This commitment was previously highlighted in discussions regarding the significant approval for the Nokonoko Integrated Development, which aims to create a residential and commercial hub along the Suva-Nausori corridor while enforcing strict sustainability practices.

Through collaborative engagement and community consultations, the Fijian Government has expressed its desire to ensure that developments contribute positively to both local economies and environmental integrity. As the situation evolves, there remains optimism that responsible development in the region can lead to sustainable progress that enhances the quality of life for residents while respecting ecological needs.
