Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna, has expressed his commitment to diversifying the sugar industry, a goal he has harbored since the early stages of his career as a technical officer. Having officially taken over the sugar portfolio earlier this month from Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Heritage and Arts, Tunabuna indicated that he is enthusiastic about his new role and optimistic about the industry’s future.
“I am excited; diversifying the sugar industry has always been my dream since I was a technical officer,” Tunabuna stated, emphasizing his deep-rooted connection to the sector. He highlighted that the sugar industry was under the Ministry of Agriculture, along with land resettlement, during his tenure as an officer, providing him with valuable insight into the sector’s dynamics.
Recognizing the importance of collaboration between sugar and non-sugar sectors, Tunabuna assured stakeholders that despite any public discourse surrounding his appointment, his primary focus remains on fostering positive changes within the industry. He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka next week to discuss plans for the future, which will be followed by a formal briefing on the sugar industry.
Tunabuna’s leadership is expected to bring a renewed vision and strategy to the sugar sector, which plays a crucial role in the economy. His commitment to diversification reflects a proactive approach to enhancing the industry’s resilience and sustainability in the face of changing market conditions. As Tunabuna steps into this pivotal role, many share his hope for the sugar industry’s growth and evolution.
