The development of rural and maritime areas in Fiji is being prioritized as a national obligation rather than merely another governmental policy, according to the newly appointed Rural and Maritime Development Minister, Mosese Bulitavu. He took office earlier this week following a ministerial reshuffle and emphasized the importance of starting his tenure by listening to the voices from rural communities.

During a multi-stakeholder consultation event focused on the national rural development policy, held at the Fiji Football Academy in Labasa, Bulitavu stated, “There is no more meaningful way to begin this journey than by listening, building partnerships and shaping the future of rural and maritime Fiji together.” He underscored the critical role of rural and maritime communities in Fiji’s identity, economy, and resilience, highlighting their connection to natural resources, food systems, culture, and traditional governance.

Bulitavu articulated that it is not solely a policy obligation to support these communities but a fundamental national responsibility. This consultation is part of a larger initiative aimed at formulating Fiji’s first comprehensive national rural development policy. This policy is envisioned to be the central framework for government strategies, improving coordination and delivery of development initiatives within rural and outer island communities.

The Minister conveyed that the newly developed policy would enhance collaboration among different ministries, influence funding priorities, and help measure development outcomes effectively. He noted its significance as a foundational tool that will inform his ministry’s work for an extended period while also addressing persistent issues in rural areas. Through this policy, the government aims to ensure that national plans are reflective of the realities faced at local levels, fostering a more tailored approach to development.
