Chief Justice Salesi Temo has emphasized the significance of integrity and professionalism to Fiji’s newest lawyers as they embark on their legal careers. Speaking at a Bar admission ceremony, he welcomed 24 graduates from the University of Fiji’s School of Law to the High Court, highlighting that their admission marks the beginning of a serious and influential role within society.
Justice Temo illuminated the importance of the law as a cornerstone of societal stability, stating, “The law, which is fundamental to the concept of the rule of law, is what holds society together.” He cautioned that when the law is disregarded, it can lead to chaos and suffering within the community.
As newly admitted lawyers, Justice Temo reminded the graduates that they are now officers of the High Court, bearing the responsibility to protect citizens’ rights and ensure justice is served. “You have the ability to clear the cobwebs that stand in the way of citizens’ legal rights, their freedoms, their protection under the law, and their pursuit of justice,” he said.

He warned against unethical practices that could tarnish their standing, noting that a solid reputation is vital for attracting clients and accessing justice effectively. “You will be like ambassadors for the legal profession. Treat your clients properly and fairly,” he advised.
