Fiji is amplifying its efforts to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs) following the conclusion of a vital five-year collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This partnership, which focused on the Prevention and Control of NCDs, culminated in a seminar held in Suva on Friday, showcasing significant advancements in the nation’s health strategies.

Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, highlighted that the collaboration has notably reinforced Fiji’s health systems. A key outcome included the integration of the Wellness Centre into the National Food Taskforce, ensuring that health considerations are integrated into national food policy decisions.

Throughout the project, various Wellness Promoting Systems were established throughout Fiji, accompanied by the creation of Standard Operating Procedures for health screenings. A standout feature introduced was Motivational Interviewing—a counseling method designed to promote lifestyle changes—which has now been incorporated into the national training curriculum for health professionals.

The initiative has encouraged over 200 workplaces to implement health promotion plans, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing employee wellness. Furthermore, digital tools facilitated the assessment of more than 3,000 health screenings, allowing for a thorough evaluation of workforce health.

Yumi Kimura, the Resident Representative of JICA’s Fiji Office, reiterated Japan’s ongoing support for Fiji’s health initiatives. She emphasized that Fiji’s holistic approach underscores the effectiveness of cross-sector collaboration. This notion was further reinforced by a recently signed grant agreement on February 19, which aims to furnish Fiji with additional health and medical equipment.

This strengthened partnership not only reflects a proactive stance toward public health but also lays the groundwork for continued advancements in disease prevention and health promotion, ultimately improving the overall health and well-being of the Fijian population.
