The recently upgraded Naililili Nursing Station in Rewa is set to significantly enhance healthcare services for over 3,398 residents across 14 villages and 18 settlements. This renovation forms a crucial part of the government’s initiative to strengthen primary healthcare and ensure services reach rural and maritime communities efficiently.
Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu emphasized that the renewed station embodies Fiji’s commitment to universal health coverage, ensuring essential care is readily available to families in need. The improvements to the facility also include resilience against climate impacts, displaying an understanding of the unique challenges faced by remote communities.
The renovation, which amounted to $378,000, was funded through KOICA under the WHO SHAPE project. Changes made to the facility encompass a new ablution block, enhancements in plumbing and electrical systems, as well as solar installations. These upgrades are designed to facilitate better service delivery while promoting operations that are resistant to climate-related challenges.
Since its establishment in 1965, Naililili Nursing Station has been vital in providing outpatient care, immunizations, and emergency referrals. Dr. Lalabalavu acknowledged the contributions of longstanding frontline workers, including pioneering nurse Emele Ose, whose dedication has paved the way for improvements in community health.
Dr. Mark Jacobs, WHO Representative to the South Pacific, highlighted the importance of fostering community resilience in the face of climate challenges. Similarly, KOICA Fiji Director Hankyulsam Cho noted that strong local participation is essential for achieving sustainable health solutions.
The reopening of this facility serves not only to provide essential health services to families, schoolchildren, and vulnerable groups but also reaffirms the ongoing commitment to ensuring accessible and reliable healthcare across Fiji.
