Residents of Hawaii Street in Korovuto, Nadi, are raising concerns over frequent damage to water pipes, which they attribute to the heavy vehicles passing through the area. This ongoing issue has not only led to an increase in water bills but also to persistently low water pressure that affects daily living for approximately 25 households.

Abhay Nand, a local resident, expressed frustration about how the pipes, which run above ground for over a kilometer to reach homes, are often compromised. He noted that the damage occurs not only due to heavy vehicles but also from rubbish being burned near the pipes. As a result, residents face significant disruptions to their water supply, leading to inflated bills—Nand himself reported a bill exceeding $180 due to a leak caused by a burst pipe.

The situation is further exacerbated by water from these leaks pooling onto the settlement’s unpaved streets, worsening already poor road conditions. Another resident, Susan Lata, conveyed that the low water pressure complicates everyday chores, making basic activities more difficult for families in the area.

Residents have come together to submit a collective plea to the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), requesting that the main pipe be moved underground or that individual water meters be installed at each residence. Unfortunately, they report that the response from WAF has been inadequate, with no tangible assistance provided thus far.

Questions have been directed to WAF seeking clarification on the matter, as the community hopes for a resolution that will not only improve water supply and pressure but will also address the structural challenges posed by the existing water piping system. The residents remain hopeful that their concerns will soon be addressed effectively, leading to a better quality of life for all households affected.
