Ten schools in the Nadi and Lautoka areas have been chosen to establish composting centers as part of an initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. This project, led by the Pacific Recyclers Foundation in collaboration with Recycle Organics and funded by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, seeks to reduce methane emissions by encouraging sustainable organic waste management. More than 2,500 students and staff are participating, with the goal of transforming waste management practices in their communities.
At the project launch held at Nadi Sangam Primary School, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed hopes that the initiative would have positive impacts, extending beyond the schools to the surrounding communities. Radrodro praised the students and teachers for their proactive role in bringing about this change. The program’s objective is to pilot and expand organic recycling and composting efforts in the ten selected schools, with Nadi Sangam Primary School serving as the initial pilot site.
Minister Radrodro emphasized that the project highlights the readiness of the youth to take action today. The campaign is aligned with the ministry’s broader strategy to prepare students for future environmental challenges, ensuring the safe return of organic waste to the earth, reducing greenhouse gases, and promoting a harmonious relationship with nature. This initiative lays the groundwork for instilling a culture of waste responsibility and climate action among the youth, which could extend to homes and communities across Fiji.
Amitesh Deo, the founder and director of operations at the Pacific Recyclers Foundation, remarked on the project’s capacity to catalyze significant behavioral changes towards sustainability. By starting this movement in schools, the program aims to create a ripple effect, fostering a culture of environmental accountability beyond the classroom.
The initiative builds upon previous successful waste management projects led by the Pacific Recycling Foundation. Recycle Organics will provide technical support, ensuring composting practices adhere to international standards, leveraging their experience with similar projects in Fiji and other Small Island Developing States.
By offering the necessary infrastructure and training, the campaign aims to equip the next generation with the values and skills essential for promoting sustainable practices, ultimately contributing to Fiji’s long-term environmental objectives. This vision for a cleaner environment supports current goals and secures a sustainable future for the country and its citizens.
