Fiji’s MSAF Marine Environment Officer Retires After 30 Years Guarding the Seas

Meli Tokolauvere has officially retired after over thirty years of exemplary service as the Marine Environment and Pollution Officer at the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). His longstanding journey in the maritime industry began with the Fiji Islands Maritime Safety Administration (FIMSA), where he started as an engineer, showing an early dedication to marine environmental protection.

During his career, Tokolauvere faced numerous challenges, including significant maritime incidents like the oil spill from the MV Southern Phoenix in 2017. He vividly recalls the urgency of that fateful morning when he was called at 3 a.m. to respond to the situation. Using a 20-meter French boom, he effectively mitigated the spill’s environmental impact, showcasing his skills and unwavering commitment to protecting Fiji’s waters.

Tokolauvere reflects on the considerable advancements in pollution response technology throughout his career, noting how far the resources have come since he first began. He is thankful for the training and support provided by the New Zealand government, which helped transform him from a novice into a leader in deploying cutting-edge maritime equipment across Fiji.

The camaraderie among his MSAF colleagues is something he will deeply miss as he transitions into retirement. Now, with more time to focus on his family—often compromised during his extensive commitments at sea—he eagerly anticipates exploring this new phase of life.

In parting, Tokolauvere shared a simple yet profound message with his colleagues and the future generation in the maritime industry: “Do your job. Help will come.” MSAF has acknowledged his years of dedicated service and extends its best wishes for his retirement.
