Fiji's Military Seeks Meaningful Reconciliation with Indo-Fijian Community

Fiji’s Military Seeks Forgiveness to Heal Indo-Fijian Wounds

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is making notable efforts to reconcile with the Indo-Fijian community by preparing to seek forgiveness for its involvement in events from 1987 that have left lasting wounds. Defense Minister Pio Tikoduadua outlined these intentions during a recent session in Parliament, emphasizing the need for a respectful and genuine approach to this delicate undertaking.

Tikoduadua asserted that the RFMF is dedicated not only to seeking forgiveness but also to carefully considering the most effective means to achieve this goal. He stressed that any such request should go beyond mere symbolism; it must be deeply anchored in an understanding of the historical context and the experiences of those who were affected.

As part of this initiative, the RFMF is contemplating various avenues of community engagement, including dialogues, written acknowledgments, and culturally sensitive practices that cater specifically to Indo-Fijian families. These efforts are designed to honor the individual and collective narratives of those impacted, demonstrating a commitment to reconciliation that respects traditional customs.

The Minister highlighted the importance of accuracy and dignity in the process, aiming to genuinely grasp what the communities view as significant. Currently, the RFMF is in the early phases of gathering information to better understand the events of 1987, which will help in determining effective outreach strategies to engage the Indo-Fijian community.

With an overarching goal of promoting national healing, Tikoduadua explained that the aim is to acknowledge the enduring impact of past actions on families that span generations, thereby laying the groundwork for long-term national unity. He reiterated the RFMF’s commitment to avoid empty gestures, focusing instead on sincerity and substance in its approach. This dedication signifies the RFMF’s desire to authentically acknowledge its past actions and seek forgiveness in a way that resonates meaningfully with those who endured the hardships of that tumultuous period.

This initiative represents a hopeful stride towards healing and reconciliation in Fiji, highlighting the potential for repairing relationships and fostering unity among diverse communities.
