Fiji Sets New Course: Military as Stabilizing Force in Democracy Reforms

Fiji’s Military Reforms Signal Shift Toward Civilian Rule

Fiji’s Defense Minister, Pio Tikoduadua, has lauded the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) for their steadfast commitment to democratic principles and respect for civilian governance, particularly during times of political change. Speaking at the National Federation Party convention in Labasa, Tikoduadua praised the military for adhering to the National Security Strategy, which is crucial for maintaining national stability.

Emphasizing the gradual nature of reforms, Tikoduadua highlighted the Police Reset program, designed to bolster accountability and trust within the security sector. He used a metaphor of a prawn not turning red instantly in boiling water to illustrate the need for patience and continuous efforts in building public trust for both the police and military forces.

Fiji is currently experiencing its longest period without military intervention since an election, a milestone Tikoduadua attributes to ongoing reforms redefining the military’s role away from politics. This aligns with previous discussions stressing the importance of the RFMF as a stabilizing entity rather than a political force. Tikoduadua referenced past political upheavals involving the military, such as the coups in 1987, 2000, and 2006, highlighting the necessity of learning from history to prevent its repetition.

The Minister urged all Fijians to support peace by backing security forces and fostering national harmony. His vision of the RFMF working alongside civilian authorities reflects a broader national ambition for unity and inclusion, aiming to build a more harmonious society.

Previous engagements have echoed the importance of transparency and the rejection of political manipulation within the military. Key figures, including RFMF Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, have also emphasized this transformation, advocating for a peaceful and democratic Fiji.

As the nation navigates this period of transformation, the collective efforts to redefine the military’s role are seen as a positive step towards sustained peace and security. This trajectory promises a more inclusive and secure society, placing the rights and safety of every individual at the forefront.
