The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is embarking on a crucial examination of its historical involvement in political matters to redefine its role and align more closely with contemporary defense standards. Pio Tikoduadua, the Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister, addressed Parliament to highlight the importance of this review, which stems from the military’s past involvement in political unrest.
During his speech, Tikoduadua underscored the need to reassess command structures, leadership expectations, and internal decision-making processes. The goal is to transform the RFMF into a professional defense institution operating under civilian control. He referred to this initiative as “clearing a lens,” aimed at eliminating misconceptions, internal conflicts, and the negative impacts of historical events on the military’s current focus.
The minister pointed out that the RFMF intends to engage in structured reflection and open dialogues with communities affected by its past actions to gain a clearer understanding of its responsibilities. This initiative is expected to enhance stability within the institution and reduce operational distortions.
Tikoduadua reported that adjustments are already underway, which include bolstering support services, fostering discussions about discipline and conduct, and improving direct communication with the families of individuals affected by the military’s past. He emphasized a strong commitment to preventing the reoccurrence of behaviors linked to past instabilities that could disrupt current and future operations.
The Fijian Government supports the RFMF’s reconciliation efforts while ensuring a balance of support and oversight. Tikoduadua reiterated that while the military is responsible for its introspection, the government will remain involved to guarantee that the reconciliation process adheres to constitutional values, respects citizens’ rights, and encourages community unity.
