Fiji’s Media Hall of Fame Class of 2025: Legends Recognized at FAME Awards

The FAME Awards, held on Saturday night at the Novotel Lami Convention & Entertainment Centre, honored veteran journalists who have made a significant impact on Fiji’s media landscape. Five distinguished individuals were inducted into the Fiji Media Hall of Fame Class of 2025, recognizing their unwavering dedication and contributions to journalism.

Among the honorees is Vijendra Kumar, celebrated as the first local editor of The Fiji Times. Renowned for his mentorship and courage, Kumar has played a vital role in shaping generations of journalists with his steadfast commitment to truth and integrity.

Masimeke Latianara, who dedicated an impressive 55 years to educating the people of Fiji, began his career as a civil servant before joining the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) in 1958. He retired at the age of 80 and sadly passed away in 2019, leaving behind a rich legacy in the media landscape.

Laisa Taga broke barriers as the first female editor of a daily newspaper in Fiji, boasting 30 years of experience in the field. Starting her career in 1978 with the Fiji Sun, Taga covered major events, including military coups, and her influence on the industry was palpable until her passing in 2014.

Keith Broadbridge, a veteran broadcaster who arrived in Fiji in 1952 with little more than a suitcase, devoted 63 years to the media industry, becoming a trusted voice through his work with FBC. He was deeply respected in the community, leaving a lasting impact before his death in 2019.

William Parkinson emerged as a visionary in broadcasting, establishing one of the most influential media organizations in Fiji by launching the first 24-hour FM radio station, FM 96, in 1984. At just 22, Parkinson’s innovative approach transformed the broadcasting landscape, and this year, his company marks its 40th anniversary.

The recognition of these veteran journalists not only honors their past contributions but also serves as an inspiration for younger media professionals. Their legacies stand as a beacon of integrity and excellence, encouraging a commitment to quality reporting that fosters hope for the future of media in Fiji.
