Fiji Partners with Captain Cook Cruises to Launch Floating Classrooms for Marine Education

Fiji’s Maritime Education Gets a Boost as University of Fiji Partners with Captain Cook Cruises

Fiji is set to enhance its maritime and marine science education through a significant partnership between the University of Fiji and Captain Cook Cruises Fiji. This collaboration will be formally established through a memorandum of understanding, aligning educational initiatives with the 2025 theme of the International Maritime Organization’s World Maritime Day: “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

Professor Shaista Shameem, Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji, highlighted the transformative potential of this agreement, offering students unique opportunities such as floating laboratories and marine biology cadetships. These educational prospects aim to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14, focused on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources. Furthermore, the partnership is expected to fast-track the University’s plans to create a marine park, enriching both practical learning and research initiatives for students.

Captain Cook Cruises Fiji’s Executive Director, Allison Haworth West, pointed out that the vessels will serve dual purposes as tourist attractions and interactive classrooms, allowing students to gain hands-on training and research experience while engaging in commercial voyages. This initiative supports the ongoing efforts of the IMO’s new Regional Presence Office in Suva, dedicated to improving maritime safety, protecting the environment, and fostering the Pacific’s Blue Economy.

This collaborative effort is in line with Fiji’s ongoing commitment to developing its maritime industry, as demonstrated by other initiatives like the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies at Fiji National University. Collectively, these efforts highlight Fiji’s dedication to merging educational advancement with sustainable maritime practices, playing a pivotal role in preparing future leaders to effectively tackle ecological challenges.

By fostering a synergy between educational institutions and industry leaders, Fiji is making significant strides towards a sustainable future for its vital marine industries. These efforts not only aim to preserve Fiji’s rich maritime heritage but also strengthen its capacity to contribute meaningfully to global maritime solutions, showcasing the country’s leadership in sustainable marine education and practices.
