The community of Macuata-i-wai in Fiji’s Northern Division is embarking on a transformative journey toward resilience and renewal in response to the challenges posed by climate change. Recently at the COP30 Climate Mobility Pavilion, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) announced the first grant agreement from the Community Climate Adaptation Fund (C-CAF), specifically designated for Macuata-i-wai. This milestone represents a significant advancement in empowering local populations to tackle climate-related issues effectively.
Once a vibrant community housing twenty households, Macuata-i-wai has experienced severe struggles as climate change takes its toll. Currently, only two households remain due to the alarming rise in sea levels, saltwater intrusion that has polluted freshwater resources, and alarming rates of coastal erosion that have forced families to move inland.
The C-CAF grant is positioned to provide essential funding aimed at restoring freshwater systems, building climate-resilient housing, and revitalizing sustainable livelihoods within the community. A unique feature of this initiative is its direct funding manner, which directs support straight to the community—eliminating intermediaries and ensuring that the resources are utilized efficiently. This model promotes ownership and accountability, facilitating the swift realization of crucial climate action initiatives.
This effort is in line with Fiji’s broader commitment to bolster community-driven adaptation strategies. It underscores the pressing need for resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding the recurrent environmental threats faced by at-risk communities across the archipelago. Fiji’s leadership in climate adaptation is gaining recognition, especially as it became the first nation to access the C-CAF funding, receiving a grant of $100,000 for localized projects aimed at addressing urgent climate challenges.
