Fiji Elevates Digital Literacy Through Libraries During National Library Week

Fiji’s Library Revolution: From Shelves to Digital Skills

The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, emphasized the paramount importance of literacy in the context of a digitally-driven world during the National Library Week closing ceremony at Suva Grammar School. With the 2025 International Literacy Day theme, “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era,” Radrodro highlighted literacy’s role as a fundamental pillar for personal empowerment and social inclusion, aligning with global educational goals and local policies.

National Library Week underscores the evolving role of libraries, transforming from mere book repositories to vibrant hubs fostering education, creativity, and innovation. Radrodro stressed the shared responsibility in maintaining dynamic libraries and proposed initiatives like poetry recitals, creative writing challenges, and book swaps to cultivate a reading culture. The government’s investment in enhancing library resources, especially in remote areas, and continuous training for teachers and librarians demonstrate a firm commitment to maintaining literacy and broadening education accessibility.

These efforts align with ongoing educational initiatives that stress libraries’ significance in promoting educational growth and cultural enrichment. As digital technologies continue to influence communication and learning, digital literacy has become vital, improving information access and fostering students’ innovation and competitiveness on a global scale.

Despite challenges such as resource shortages and limited digital skills in rural areas, Fiji has made commendable progress. Collaborative efforts among policymakers, educators, and communities aim to prioritize digital literacy as a crucial life skill, addressing educational gaps and preparing individuals for the digital economy.

This dual focus on traditional literacy and digital skills reflects a forward-thinking vision, empowering Fiji’s youth to navigate an ever-evolving global landscape. By prioritizing libraries and literacy, Fiji lays a solid foundation for continuous educational progress, ensuring that these elements remain key to community resilience and development in the future.
