Lautoka Hospital has achieved notable success in cardiac care, having performed a total of 285 open-heart surgeries and 322 angiograms since the introduction of advanced cardiac services. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu announced that these open-heart surgeries began in October 2022, while catheterization laboratory services were initiated in May of this year.
These cardiothoracic services are a result of a public-private partnership with Health Care Fiji Pte Ltd, collaborating with MIOT Investment (Fiji) Pte Ltd and MIOT Hospitals Pvt. Limited in India. This collaboration aims to improve the availability and accessibility of specialized medical services within Fiji, significantly decreasing the necessity for patients to travel abroad for treatment.
The figures were disclosed following an inquiry from Opposition MP Parveen Kumar regarding the overall number of cardiac procedures performed at Lautoka Hospital. Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted that this initiative showcases the country’s dedication to expanding specialized healthcare services domestically.
The establishment of these advanced cardiac services aligns with earlier reports about the launch of a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in Fiji, which has created opportunities for real-time cardiac diagnostics and interventions. Such progress is vital in ensuring timely and essential care for patients, thereby supporting their recovery and alleviating the burdens associated with medical travel.
As these services continue to expand, they promise to enhance healthcare access for the Fijian populace and position Fiji as a potential hub for medical tourism. The bolstered medical facilities could attract international patients seeking high-quality care in a picturesque environment, which could, in turn, stimulate the local economy.
The advancements taking place at Lautoka Hospital mark a positive trend in the evolution of healthcare, reflecting a collective commitment to improving medical standards and health outcomes for all Fijians.
