The Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, has urgently called for enhanced maritime surveillance around Fiji’s outer islands in response to escalating concerns over drug trafficking. This appeal was made during his inaugural Bose Vanua ko Lau since being established as Tui Nayau, where he raised alarms about unidentified vessels entering Lau waters, which pose serious risks to local communities.
Ratu Tevita highlighted the pressing need for the government to bolster its monitoring efforts regarding maritime activities. He stated, “In Lau, we are concerned about unidentified ships and yachts entering our waters.” While acknowledging that drug trafficking and substance abuse are significant national issues, he emphasized that solutions must begin at the local community level, stressing the importance of strong family ties, discipline, and moral guidance to restore community well-being.
The Tui Nayau also pointed out concerning social consequences of drug abuse, such as the increasing spread of HIV, which he believes should be addressed within the home. “We can only address these issues by strengthening family relationships. That is where discipline must begin,” he remarked. He expressed concern that the excessive use of kava often overshadows the necessary focus on promoting community health and solidarity.
