Limited connectivity and inadequate infrastructure in the Lau Group are posing challenges to tourism development and essential service delivery. In a proactive response, the Fijian government has launched a comprehensive initiative through a multi-agency Lau Tourism Scoping Mission, which recently concluded its activities and returned to Suva.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, emphasized the importance of this mission in coordinating sustainable planning efforts for the outer islands. The team’s activities wrapped up on Vanuabalavu, where they conducted inspections of various locations relevant to tourism and transportation enhancements.
During this visit, the delegation focused on evaluating the Vanuabalavu Airstrip to improve aviation access and regional connectivity. A notable achievement during the mission was the installation of a Starlink satellite kit aimed at boosting internet access for the local community. Furthermore, the team assessed tourism potential at Qilaqila Bay and Nabavatu Island, exploring opportunities these sites could offer to attract tourists. The mission also included a visit to Lomaloma, the last village before returning to Suva.
An emotional moment during the mission was a wreath-laying ceremony at the burial site of the late Prime Minister and Tui Kuboca, Laisenia Qarase. This tribute, led by Gavoka in collaboration with the United Nations Resident Coordinator for the Pacific, Dirk Wagener, underscored the significance of the occasion. Following this heartfelt ceremony, the delegation was graciously hosted for lunch by Leba Qarase at her residence in Mavana Village.
Officials conveyed their optimism that the insights and recommendations from this mission would greatly influence decision-making regarding future tourism development, improved connectivity, and the delivery of essential services within the Lau Group. This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to enhancing the livelihoods of residents in the outer islands while promoting sustainable tourism practices.
