The Local Government and Housing Ministry is actively addressing land availability challenges, prompting the development of new housing strategies, according to Minister Maciu Nalumisa. In a recent discussion during the Fiji Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition 2025, he underscored the importance of solving land tenure and lease renewal issues, stressing that secure land access is essential for any housing initiative.
Minister Nalumisa highlighted that homes cannot be built without land and expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), which is instrumental in addressing problems related to informal settlements. “We are fortunate that TLTB is willing to partner with the Ministry of Housing and our Lands Department,” he remarked, signaling a unified approach to resolving these longstanding issues.
The minister identified land scarcity as a critical concern from Suva to Nausori, which has led the ministry to extend its focus beyond urban areas. Recently, the Public Rental Board secured land in Namelimeli, Navua, setting the stage for the ministry to broaden its housing construction efforts. “We’re constructing not only in Suva but also moving to areas like Navua and Korovou,” he affirmed.
With urbanization intensifying and housing demand escalating, Minister Nalumisa addressed the rising concerns regarding affordability. To combat these challenges, the Housing Authority is collaborating with contractors to build model homes, significantly lowering costs. “When the construction cost decreases, the question of affordability becomes more manageable,” he noted.
The minister reassured citizens that land could be procured at reasonable prices, facilitating the construction of affordable homes without compromising quality standards. This approach aligns with the government’s wider objectives, including impactful initiatives designed to address housing shortages and improve living conditions for all Fijians.
As these plans unfold, there is a renewed optimism for families in search of secure housing solutions, demonstrating the government’s proactive commitment to enhancing community welfare across Fiji. By fostering partnerships among various stakeholders and effectively responding to urgent housing demands, the government is taking significant steps toward a brighter and more secure future for all citizens.
