The Suva Tennis Association has concluded a significant 10-day training tour at the Yoshida Tennis Training Centre in Japan, marking a milestone in its ongoing effort to cultivate young tennis talent. This exclusive tour allowed Fiji’s junior players to experience elite tennis coaching combined with the rich cultural fabric of Japan.
Invited to one of Japan’s premier youth training facilities, the young athletes were immersed in a program emphasizing technical excellence and a holistic player development approach. In addition to intense on-court training sessions, the participants engaged in traditional Japanese activities such as calligraphy, tea ceremonies, taiko drumming, and dance. These activities were designed to enhance discipline and focus, key attributes for success in tennis.
Head Coach Sumit Lal, accompanying the junior team, described the program as transformative. He noted the rigorous yet productive nature of the training and highlighted the exceptional discipline and immediate absorption of instructions by Japanese players, traits that made a significant impression on the Suva juniors.
The Fijian athletes trained alongside their Japanese counterparts, providing them with a firsthand view of Japan’s structured and precise sporting culture. This experience broadened their perspective and fueled their motivation to pursue higher standards in tennis.
