The Suva Tennis Association has recently wrapped up a transformative 10-day junior training tour at Japan’s esteemed Yoshida Tennis Training Centre. This exclusive program offered an unparalleled opportunity for Suva’s rising tennis stars, combining elite tennis development with rich cultural experiences in Japan to hone not only their skills but their mindset as well.
Yoshida, distinguished by its soft pink banner symbolizing Japan’s revered cherry blossoms and embodying renewal and growth, instilled in the young athletes a philosophy that champions facing challenges with determination. The mornings were dedicated to cultural activities such as calligraphy, tea ceremonies, taiko drumming, and traditional dance. These activities emphasized focus, discipline, and attentive listening, equipping players with mental skills valuable both on and off the court.
Afternoons were a time for high-intensity tennis sessions with Japanese juniors, providing Suva’s players with insight into the precision and work ethic that are hallmarks of Japanese sports. Head Coach Sumit described the tour as a pivotal moment, observing significant shifts in player mindsets, underlining the importance of discipline and focus in their approach to the game.
Team Manager Saroj Izumi emphasized the ongoing need for continuing coach education and longer overseas attachments, highlighting the potential for ongoing development. With Japan hosting several International Tennis Federation (ITF) events, including one at Yoshida, Suva Tennis foresees opportunities for future collaboration.
These experiences have not only elevated the players’ capabilities but also opened avenues for future growth in tennis within Fiji. The Suva Tennis Association expressed gratitude to Yoshida Tennis Training Centre for its warm hospitality and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Fiji’s tennis talent on an international scale.
Building upon recent initiatives, such as the school-based development programs in Fiji, the association is fostering a comprehensive approach to nurturing young local talent. The ongoing efforts to cultivate a robust tennis culture in Fiji, underpinned by sponsorships and grassroots programs, signal a bright future for the sport. This international training experience underscores Fiji’s ambitions on the global stage, providing a solid foundation for these young players to thrive both locally and internationally.
