Fiji’s Indigenous Youth-Led Naidiri Marine Park Wins OceanLove Innovation Award 2025

Fiji is once again at the forefront of global environmental efforts with the recognition of its indigenous youth-led project, the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park, located in Sigatoka. Manoa Duwai, the park’s president, announced that the initiative received the prestigious OceanLove Innovation Award 2025 during the Blue Economy World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. This accolade not only highlights Fiji’s leadership in ocean conservation but also underscores the importance of innovation in protecting marine ecosystems.

In a competitive field with 260 entries from 64 countries, the Naidiri Marine Biodiversity Park stood out by excelling in the education category, showcasing its vital role in advancing ocean-focused initiatives worldwide. Established in 2009 in Naidiri Bay, Nadroga, the park has been actively engaged in operating a Marine Protected Area which has contributed significantly to the restoration and preservation of Fiji’s marine ecosystems.

The local community manages this enriching resource, maintaining a strong connection to their traditional lands and seas. Visitors to the park can enjoy an unforgettable coral reef snorkeling experience, along with tours of the indigenous village that offer insights into the community’s rich culture and conservation efforts.

Moreover, the award event recognized other global efforts in marine conservation. The second winner was Egypt’s Very Nile, acknowledged for its contributions to the Nile River ecosystem. Tanzania’s Husna Amimu Msola took home the third award for her notable environmental initiatives, while the Association for Community Awareness in Cameroon and Eco-Dahab, led by Nadine Wahab in Egypt, received the fourth and fifth awards respectively for their community-focused sustainable projects.

Fiji’s growing reputation in sustainable tourism and marine conservation continues to garner international attention, building on previous efforts recognized in various platforms, such as National Geographic’s lists highlighting Fiji as a must-visit destination. The country’s commitment to preserving its ecological heritage while encouraging local participation and economic benefit demonstrates a hopeful path forward for both the environment and the communities relying on it. These initiatives not only spotlight Fiji’s commitment to protecting its natural resources but also create opportunities for responsible engagement with its vibrant marine life.
