Hospitals throughout Fiji are delivering essential medical care daily, supported by the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Partnership. This collaboration aims to strengthen Fiji’s health infrastructure, guaranteeing that medical services remain safe, reliable, and accessible both now and in the future.
A major initiative currently in progress is the development of a new national referral hospital. This effort includes a partnership between Australia and the Fiji Government to create a comprehensive Master Plan that outlines a 30-year vision for health services. This Master Plan will not only provide a framework for clinical services but also assess workforce needs and infrastructure demands necessary to address future healthcare challenges. Australia has pledged approximately FJD 14.7 million to implement this plan by 2027.
In addition to the planning of the new national hospital, urgent upgrades are being made to the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital with Australia’s assistance. These enhancements are designed to improve safety and ensure the hospital functions effectively on a daily basis. Significant renovations include repairing roofs on multiple buildings to prevent leaks, enhancing the Acute Patient Ward with additional bathrooms and improved accessibility, and installing a new water tank to stabilize the supply.
Australia’s support extends beyond CWM Hospital; it also enhances healthcare access across other regions in Fiji. At Labasa Divisional Hospital, a new containerized medical waste incinerator has replaced outdated disposal methods, significantly improving infection prevention and control for both patients and healthcare workers.
Moreover, extensive refurbishments are being undertaken at Vunisea Hospital in Kadavu. These renovations include upgrades to wards and staff facilities, enhancements in maternity and pharmacy services, and the establishment of a dedicated birthing unit along with a space for gender-based violence care. These improvements cater to about 11,000 residents, reducing their need to travel to Suva for medical treatment and strengthening the hospital’s ability to withstand extreme weather conditions.
At Waiyevo Hospital in Taveuni, safety measures and functionality are being enhanced with refurbishments of wards and emergency areas, along with the installation of a cyclone-rated roof. This initiative ensures that approximately 17,000 residents in Taveuni and nearby islands have continuous access to essential healthcare services.
The collaboration between Australia and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services emphasizes not only immediate enhancements in healthcare but also strengthens local capabilities by utilizing Fijian contractors and suppliers. This partnership underscores a commitment to building a resilient health system capable of providing quality care for both present and future needs.
