The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is set to engage in discussions with the Office of the President next week regarding a potential formal engagement with King Charles III. GCC Chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula has indicated that this meeting aligns with efforts to reinforce the longstanding traditional ties between the GCC and the British Monarchy.
This planned dialogue follows an earlier encounter between President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and King Charles during the President’s official visit to England last year. The upcoming meeting will also include the President’s Official Secretary and will concentrate on outlining the objectives of any proposed visit, along with the specific matters to be addressed with the King.
Ratu Viliame emphasized the importance of initial clarifications regarding the topics to be discussed. “We have to first clarify what is needed and what topics will be discussed with the King. Once that is confirmed, we will be able to finalize the GCC’s official visit, which will include the Tui Macuata,” he stated.
The council views reestablishing formal interactions with the British Monarchy as an essential step in reinforcing Fiji’s traditional and historical connections with the Royal Family. This initiative reflects an earnest desire to foster relationships that have historical significance, aiming to bridge contemporary ties through a shared cultural heritage. The meetings represent a hopeful development in the diplomatic narrative between Fiji and the United Kingdom.
