Fiji’s Five-Strong Track Team Heads to Oceania Cup in Tonga

Five of Fiji’s elite track and field athletes are set to showcase their talents at the 2025 Oceania Cup starting tomorrow in Tonga. The selected team, which departed for Tonga earlier today, comprises Errol Qaqa (Men’s 110m Hurdles), Samuela Vunivalu (Men’s Long Jump and Triple Jump), Maryann Macedru (Women’s Shot Put), Loata Lewageena (Women’s Javelin and Discus), and Sereana Viriviri (Women’s Long Jump and High Jump).

The athletes earned their spots on the team following impressive performances at the recent Pacific Mini Games held in Palau, where Fiji’s athletics team secured a total of 22 gold, 27 silver, and 21 bronze medals, positioning them third in the overall medal tally. Errol Qaqa notably claimed gold in the Men’s 110m hurdles, achieving a remarkable time of 14.59 seconds, while Samuela Vunivalu also shined in the field events.

Although sprinter Heleina Young was selected to join the squad, she will miss the competition due to medical reasons. Young’s recent achievements, including being named the Most Outstanding Female Athlete at the Pacific Mini Games, where she won three gold medals, highlight the depth of talent within the Fijian team. Her commendable results—including times that place her among the best in Fiji’s athletics history—demonstrate her resilience after a six-year hiatus from the sport.

The Oceania Cup, running from tomorrow to Saturday, serves as a vital platform for these athletes to compete against the finest talents in the region, providing not only a chance to win medals but also an opportunity to gain invaluable experience. The anticipation surrounding this event reflects a ongoing commitment within Fiji’s athletics community to nurture talent and promote excellence. As these athletes take the stage in Tonga, their journey and the support from their nation cultivate hope for future success in international athletics.
