A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a woman in her 60s from Buca Village, marking Fiji’s first road fatality of the year. The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, near Nasue Settlement in Vunilagi, Savusavu, involving two vehicles.

According to police reports, the woman was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man when their vehicle veered into the opposite lane, resulting in a collision with an oncoming vehicle driven by a 51-year-old man. In addition to the deceased, two children aged six and 15 were also in the vehicle and have been taken to Savusavu Hospital for medical treatment. While their injuries are serious enough to require hospitalization, their conditions are being closely monitored by medical staff.

The driver of the woman’s vehicle is expected to be questioned by authorities as they launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. This incident starkly contrasts with the same period last year, which saw no fatalities on the roads. Authorities emphasize the importance of vehicular safety and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The community has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting the vital need for safety on Fiji’s roads. As investigations continue, there is hope that lessons will be learned to enhance safety measures and prevent such incidents in the future.
