A heartbreaking road accident in Fiji has resulted in the death of a woman in her 60s from Buca Village. This tragic event marks the country’s first road fatality of 2026. The collision occurred on Tuesday morning, January 20, near Nasue Settlement in Vunilagi, Savusavu, involving two vehicles.

Police reports indicate that the woman was a passenger in a car driven by a 43-year-old man. Their vehicle reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with another vehicle operated by a 51-year-old man. Alongside the deceased, two children, aged six and 15, were also present in the car and have since been admitted to Savusavu Hospital for treatment. While their injuries are serious, medical staff are closely monitoring their conditions.

The authorities are set to question the driver of the vehicle the woman was in as part of their ongoing investigation into the incident. This unfortunate event stands in stark contrast to the same period last year when Fiji experienced no road fatalities. Officials are stressing the critical importance of adherence to traffic regulations and vehicular safety to mitigate the risk of similar tragedies.

The community has responded with deep sorrow over the loss, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures. As investigations move forward, there is a hopeful sentiment that the findings will lead to enhanced safety protocols, ultimately preventing future accidents on Fiji’s roads.
