Australian entrepreneur Ian Alouf is partnering with the Fijian Government to transform the nation’s waste management system with the introduction of Fiji’s inaugural energy-from-waste power plant. This ambitious initiative, driven by Alouf’s joint venture, The Next Generation Holdings (Fiji) Pte Ltd, in collaboration with both local and international investors, will be situated in Vuda, Lautoka.
Alouf aims to kickstart construction by the end of 2027, with the goal of launching the plant by 2029. The project is designed to revolutionize how waste is managed in Fiji, focusing on sourcing materials from landfills across the country. It is anticipated that the initiative will not only improve environmental practices but also generate employment and create business opportunities for local communities.
One of the most impactful elements of this venture is its potential to reduce Fiji’s dependence on diesel fuel. This project is projected to save the nation around $250 million annually on imported fuel used for power generation. With a proven track record in waste management as the owner of Australia’s largest privately-owned waste and recycling company, Dial a Dump, Alouf has been instrumental in pioneering commercial recycling practices that emphasize sustainability.
His work in Australia demonstrates that generating profit and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. Beyond waste management, Alouf is also the founder of Ahoy Club, a leading entity in the luxury yachting industry, with operations spanning Australia, Europe, and the Americas.
To engage the community regarding the energy-from-waste facility and a private port, public consultations are set to begin tomorrow. These sessions will take place at various locations, including the Dreketi Temple in Lautoka on January 15, the Saweni Salvation Army Church on January 16, and again on January 17.
Through this groundbreaking project, Alouf envisions creating a sustainable energy solution for Fiji while also promoting a culture of responsible waste management, which is expected to enhance local employment and economic growth. This initiative marks a significant step forward towards fostering a sustainable future for Fiji.
