Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited (FHCL) is making strides in the forestry sector with the appointment of Semi Vuloaloa Dranibaka as its inaugural local Chief Executive Officer, effective September 1st. This historic move marks a significant advancement in local leadership and reflects FHCL’s commitment to fostering talent within the region.
Dranibaka brings over 34 years of expertise in Fiji’s forestry industry, having held the position of General Manager since 2021. His impressive qualifications include forestry degrees from the University of Melbourne and Southern Cross University, complemented by hands-on experience at the Ministry of Fisheries and Forests. This transition is part of FHCL’s governance reforms, moving away from the General Manager role in favor of structures that meet international corporate standards.
FHCL’s Board Chair, Iowane Naiveli, underlined the importance of Dranibaka’s appointment, praising his deep dedication and significant contributions to the sustainable management of Fiji’s mahogany resources. With Dranibaka’s leadership, the Board is optimistic about the prospect of FHCL achieving international forest certification, which would enhance the economic benefits of Fiji’s mahogany—often termed “green gold”—for both landowners and the broader economy.
In addition to Dranibaka’s appointment, FHCL has welcomed Faranisese Tatila Gavidi as the new Deputy Chairperson, marking her as the first woman to take on this role. Since her addition to the FHCL Board in 2023, Gavidi has leveraged her extensive legal background from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, particularly in taxation and regulatory compliance, thus strengthening FHCL’s governance framework.
FHCL is also dedicated to enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability in the forestry sector, with plans to secure forest certification, an essential step in accessing broader markets and ensuring international compliance. A notable achievement includes the acquisition of a substantial grant amounting to $956,000 aimed at supporting these certification efforts.
The proactive initiatives undertaken by FHCL not only point toward a bright future for the corporation but also contribute positively to the Fijian economy. By actively engaging with landowners, implementing strategic management practices, and addressing certification needs, FHCL stands out as a beacon of hope and resilience. These efforts are foundational to promoting economic growth alongside environmental conservation, leading the charge towards a sustainable timber industry in Fiji while fostering innovation and community involvement in forestry practices.
