Fiji’s agricultural landscape is evolving into a powerful force for tourism, rural advancement, and economic resilience, as showcased at the 2025 National Agriculture Show. This event spotlighted agritourism, featuring traditional agricultural practices, organic produce, and authentic Fijian culinary offerings, highlighting the sector’s potential to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy.

Tomasi Tunabuna, the Minister for Agriculture, directed attention to smart farming strategies, infrastructure developments, and market accessibility enhancements as pivotal in boosting rural incomes. This is in line with the coalition government’s goals to invest in climate-smart farming technologies, enhance the value of agricultural products, and improve market access, particularly for the rural and maritime areas.

Throughout the event, discussions focused on the need for reforms in organic farming policies and strengthening connections between agriculture and tourism. Tunabuna advocated for a shift from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture, calling for policy adjustments to support exceptional farmers. He suggested retaining top scientists and outsourcing specific services to enhance efficiency.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, highlighted the importance of collaboration between the agriculture and tourism sectors. With nearly a million tourists visiting Fiji each year, there’s significant potential for local farmers to supply fresh produce to hotels and resorts, enriching the agro-tourism experience. Gavoka proposed initiatives like the Farm to Fork program, which seeks to connect farmers with tourism operators, thus minimizing the economic impact of food imports.

The event, themed “Be Resilient, Produce Smart, Go Local, and Grow Agro-Tourism,” underlined a dual focus on local agricultural development and enhancement of the tourism experience. These initiatives reflect Fiji’s commitment to climate-smart agriculture, aiming for sustainable growth that nourishes both sectors while ensuring food security and economic stability.
