The Agriculture Ministry has announced significant advancements in rural development, having completed the construction of 73 farm roads since 2023, with plans for an additional 13 roads slated for 2025-2026. During a recent address to Parliament, Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized the transformative impact of the Farm Access Program, highlighting its vital role in linking isolated communities to essential markets, educational facilities, and services.
This initiative plays a crucial role for farmers by allowing them to enhance their production capabilities and diversify their crop offerings, leading to increased income. The Central Division has emerged as a standout success, having built 36 roads in the past two years, benefiting over 700 households. Other divisions, including Western with 25 roads, Northern with five, and Eastern with seven, have collectively extended the program’s benefits to over 1,700 households across Fiji.
Looking forward, the Ministry has ambitious plans to construct seven new roads in the Central Division, four in the Western Division, and one each in the Northern and Eastern Divisions in the upcoming year. However, Minister Tunabuna did express concerns regarding potential delays due to lengthy tender processes, adverse weather conditions, budget constraints, and competing ministry contracts, which may affect the timely execution of these projects. Nevertheless, he remains steadfast in asserting the program’s significance for empowering farmers, underlining the government’s commitment to improving rural livelihoods and strengthening Fiji’s agricultural sector.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with the government’s broader strategy to enhance rural infrastructure, as noted by Rural and Maritime Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka.
