Fiji’s FAME Awards 2025: A Night of Journalism and Press Freedom

The Fiji Achievement in Media Excellence (FAME) Awards 2025 is set to take place on November 6 at the Novotel Lami Convention & Entertainment Centre, marking a significant milestone in Fiji’s media history. This year’s ceremony is particularly poignant as it coincides with the 19th anniversary of the censorship imposed on local newsrooms, making it a powerful celebration of resilience and press freedom in the region.

Shane Hussein, Chairman of the FAME Awards, expressed excitement over the event, noting that there have been 121 entries submitted across 25 award categories. This level of participation highlights the competitive nature of the awards, which are poised to be one of the most prestigious in Fiji’s history. Hussein emphasized the collaborative efforts of the Fijian Media Association and the Fiji Media Council in bringing this event to life, stating, “Our journalists and newsrooms have submitted strong entries, and the judges will have a delightfully difficult task shortlisting finalists and selecting winners.”

Some of the most contested categories include Best Feature Article (Print), Best Commentary or Opinion, Best Coverage of iTaukei Affairs, Best Sports Journalism, Scoop of the Year, Best Photography, Young Journalist of the Year, and Best Coverage of a Major News Event. As the judging process unfolds, finalists will be announced shortly, with all shortlisted nominees receiving complimentary invitations and digital finalist badges for the awards night.

Highlighting the significance of the awards, Hussein also confirmed that a few sponsorship tables remain available, encouraging businesses and supporters of the media to take part in this prestigious event. Additionally, the FAME Awards will honor five inductees in the revival of the Fiji Media Hall of Fame, recognizing lifetime contributions to journalism in Fiji, a gesture that underscores the enduring impact of dedicated media professionals.

The FAME Awards represent a crucial opportunity for the industry, reflecting a hopeful trajectory towards increased media freedom and recognition of journalistic excellence in Fiji. As enthusiasm builds within the media community, the event promises to foster camaraderie among journalists and celebrate the vital role that a free press plays in society. This initiative not only honors past achievements but also inspires a new generation of media professionals committed to upholding the principles of ethical journalism and press freedom.
