The Government is taking significant steps to review and refine policies and regulations aimed at ensuring the sustainability of electric vehicles (EVs), which are now increasingly present on the roads. Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasized the dual goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels through the use of EVs, while acknowledging the potential pitfalls if the electricity used to charge these vehicles is sourced from fossil fuels.
Tuisawau indicated that the government is employing an integrated approach to address these challenges. The Ministry of Transport is working closely with the Director of Transport to assess the adequacy of current regulations and policies in supporting the growth and integration of electric vehicles across the nation.
A critical aspect of this initiative includes the development of the necessary infrastructure to support EV usage. Tuisawau pointed out the question of who will absorb the costs associated with this infrastructure, noting that some private sector vehicle importers are taking the initiative to set up their own charging facilities. The government is collaborating with these entities to ensure that the planning and development of EV infrastructure aligns with broader governmental development strategies.
