Esther Tui Tikoicolo, a remarkable 23-year-old civil engineering graduate, has emerged as a source of inspiration by overcoming significant gender barriers in a predominantly male industry. This month, she celebrated her graduation with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) with Honours from Fiji National University, where she was awarded the esteemed Engineers Fiji Prize for Female Topper, recognizing her as the highest-performing female student in her program.
Originating from Juju, Rotuma, and with maternal roots in Tubou, Lakeba, Lau, Esther faced numerous challenges and biases during her academic tenure. However, her determination and hard work have been pivotal to her success. “I didn’t let difficult situations define me,” she remarked, reflecting her resilience against adversity.
Esther attributes much of her success to the unwavering support of her parents, who played an essential role in her educational journey. “There were ups and downs along the way, but my parents encouraged and helped me through it all,” she shared. This encouragement led her to take on a six-month internship with the Ministry of Public Works, where she gained invaluable experience and opened doors to future opportunities.
During her graduation ceremony, a heartfelt moment unfolded as she acknowledged the proud cheers from her family, including her grandmother, who played a significant role in her upbringing in Levuka. “Seeing my parents’ smiles, I know my hard work has finally paid off,” she expressed, underscoring the critical role of family support in realizing her ambitions.
Looking ahead, Esther aspires to become a registered engineer and aims to inspire other young women to pursue their dreams in engineering. “I want to be one of those women engineers in Fiji,” she stated, highlighting her commitment to breaking gender barriers and encouraging others to follow in her footsteps.
