The Empower Pacific Counselling Center at the CWM Hospital in Suva has officially reopened after significant renovations funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) charities. This enhancement is seen as a crucial advancement in the mental health and social support services available within Fiji.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Luke Nasedra emphasized the importance of this upgrade, stating that it signifies a strong partnership aimed at bolstering community wellbeing. The newly refurbished center is designed to offer a more inviting and comfortable environment for both clients and staff, thus promoting a sense of ease for those in need of support.
Dr. Nasedra reflected on Empower Pacific’s long-standing dedication to the Fijian community over the last 31 years. He noted that the organization has evolved into a comprehensive agency providing a diverse array of support services, including therapeutic counseling, HIV prevention initiatives, and various focused interventions that aim to foster equality across the Pacific.
He praised the team’s efforts in addressing critical areas such as therapeutic counseling, managing cases of gender-based violence, child protection, mental health support, and psychosocial services during natural disasters. The team, which includes 10 counselors and two social workers, has effectively supported about 1,500 clients annually at the CWM Hospital, while centers nationwide reach approximately 20,000 individuals every year.
Dr. Nasedra extended his gratitude to the LDS charities for their generous contribution towards the renovations, affirming that the improvements will enhance staff morale and service delivery. He also encouraged Empower Pacific to engage in future redevelopment initiatives at the CWM Hospital, highlighting a hopeful outlook for continued progress in mental health services in Fiji.
