Fiji’s Empower Pacific Reopens After LDS-Funded Renovations

The Empower Pacific Counselling Center at CWM Hospital in Suva has reopened following significant renovations made possible by the charitable contributions from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). This development marks a vital step forward in enhancing mental health and social support services in Fiji, addressing a critical need within the community.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Luke Nasedra highlighted the significance of these upgrades, noting that they illustrate a robust partnership focused on improving community well-being. The refurbished center aims to create a more welcoming and comfortable space for clients and staff, fostering a supportive atmosphere for those seeking assistance.

Reflecting on Empower Pacific’s dedication to the Fijian community over the past 31 years, Dr. Nasedra pointed out the organization’s transformation into a comprehensive agency. They offer a wide range of support services, including therapeutic counseling, HIV prevention programs, and various targeted interventions that strive to promote equality throughout the Pacific region.

He commended the team’s work in tackling crucial issues such as therapeutic counseling, addressing gender-based violence, protecting children, providing mental health support, and offering psychosocial services during natural disasters. The dedicated group, which consists of 10 counselors and two social workers, has successfully assisted approximately 1,500 clients each year at the CWM Hospital, while services across the country reach around 20,000 individuals annually.

Dr. Nasedra expressed his gratitude towards LDS charities for their generous support in the renovations, confirming that these improvements will uplift staff morale and enhance the quality of service provided. He also encouraged Empower Pacific to look toward future redevelopment opportunities at the CWM Hospital, expressing a hopeful vision for ongoing advancements in mental health services in Fiji. This renewed commitment suggests a brighter future for mental health support in the region, underscoring the importance of community collaboration in health initiatives.
