The Ellington jetty in Rakiraki, Ra, is nearing completion and is scheduled to reopen to the public by November 22, as confirmed by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). Currently, around 90 percent of the work has been finalized, with contractors busy putting the finishing touches on the facility.
The FRA had earlier announced that the Ellington jetty would be closed from January 6, 2025, due to significant structural damage that necessitated comprehensive repairs. These repairs included the construction of a concrete deck slab and backfilling work. The recent updates indicate that the efforts to restore the jetty are progressing well, with final tasks focused on completing the jetty deck.
When the facility becomes operational again, it is anticipated to provide safer and more efficient access for commuters, transport operators, and local businesses traveling between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. This enhanced connectivity to the outer islands is vital for the region’s economic growth.
In addition to the upgrades at Ellington jetty, improvements at other jetties across Fiji are also underway. For example, solar streetlights have recently been installed at the Vunisea, Naluvea, and Kavala jetties in Kadavu, which will improve safety and visibility for the local community. These initiatives reflect Fiji’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, while also enhancing the functionality of its essential transport infrastructure.
The ongoing improvements demonstrate the government’s proactive approach to bolstering maritime safety standards and ensuring the long-term viability of critical transport hubs throughout the nation, ultimately benefiting local communities and fostering economic development in the region.
