Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has responded to public concerns over its proposed electricity tariff adjustment, emphasizing that the process is both systematic and essential for ensuring Fiji’s energy sustainability. CEO Fatiaki Gibson outlined that the proposed changes are grounded in a structured methodology consistent with the Electricity Act 2017. This process incorporates comprehensive financial audits, analysis of electricity demand trends, climate change considerations, forecasts for fuel prices, and detailed technical evaluations. He stressed that the adjustment is far from random; it has been developed in partnership with a respected Big Four audit firm through rigorous modeling.
In his statement, Gibson highlighted that electricity demand in Fiji has dramatically increased, with a rise of about nine percent recorded in 2024 alone. Looking ahead, he projects a steady growth of approximately five percent per year over the next decade, which could almost double the current demand. He warned that keeping the existing tariff levels could significantly impede necessary investments in critical infrastructure, such as new generation capacities and grid enhancements, potentially leading to a heightened risk of power outages.
The proposed tariff structure seeks to protect vulnerable households and small businesses, as almost 97 percent of customers would be within this safeguarded category. However, higher electricity consumers, who account for a substantial chunk of the total energy usage, would bear a greater portion of the costs under the new initiative.
To meet rising energy demands, EFL has pledged investments surpassing FJ$1.7 billion focused on key projects, including hydropower, solar energy, and enhanced transmission systems. These initiatives aim to bolster reliability and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, positioning Fiji for a more sustainable energy future.
Gibson has also committed to transparency and community involvement by engaging in public consultations across 17 locations nationwide, ensuring that the public’s opinions are integral to this significant dialogue. This proactive approach not only highlights EFL’s dedication to a sustainable energy future but also underlines its efforts to foster community engagement and transparency in its operations.
