Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) is under scrutiny as the Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, calls for the company to prioritize operational efficiency and transparency over increasing electricity prices. Seruiratu’s remarks come in response to the ongoing discussions regarding a proposed 25 percent tariff increase, which he believes overlooks the core issues related to EFL’s management.
He emphasized the importance of internal “housekeeping” before EFL considers additional charges to consumers. With the recent involvement of world-class Japanese partners, Seruiratu argues that EFL should leverage their expertise to enhance operational efficiency rather than impose higher costs.
Seruiratu expressed disappointment over EFL’s ongoing reliance on diesel generators powered by heavy fuel oil, criticizing this practice as contradictory to the vision of a “Green Fiji.” He pointed out that the intent of collaborating with partners like Chugoku Electric was to transition away from fossil fuels and to pursue renewable energy initiatives, including solar and hydro projects.
Furthermore, he has called for complete transparency regarding the costs associated with electricity generation. Seruiratu urged EFL to disclose the production costs of electricity from various sources—hydro, diesel, and independent producers—so Fijians can better understand where their money is being allocated.
Rejecting claims that Japanese investors influenced the proposed tariff hike, he clarified that pricing decisions are made by the regulator, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), indicating that the recent increase reflects regulatory failures. Seruiratu highlighted that during his government’s tenure in 2019, only a modest increase of 2.74 percent was permitted.
Overall, Seruiratu’s statements advocate for a restructuring of EFL’s approach to energy management, emphasizing sustainability and accountability while ensuring that consumers are not unfairly burdened with rising costs.
