A transformative investment of US$240 million backed by the World Bank is poised to significantly enhance Fiji’s healthcare sector, as the project enters an early market engagement phase. Contractors are now invited to participate in an information-sharing conference regarding the Pacific Healthy Islands Transformation (PHIT) Project, as outlined on the World Bank’s website.
Valued at around FJ$540 million based on current exchange rates, this investment stands as one of the most extensive healthcare infrastructure initiatives ever launched in Fiji. The project is a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Ministry of Finance of Fiji, drawing financial support from multiple international organizations, including the Asian Development Bank, the OPEC Fund for International Development, and the Pandemic Fund.
The PHIT Project seeks to modernize Fiji’s health system through targeted investments in key areas such as healthcare infrastructure, digital health services, primary healthcare enhancement, workforce training, and improved regional coordination.
As part of its strategy for early market engagement, the Ministry has organized a hybrid conference aimed at briefing qualified contractors on three major work packages. These packages include the design and construction of a new radiotherapy and medical imaging center adjacent to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, upgrades or complete rebuilds of 17 primary healthcare facilities located in urban, rural, and maritime areas, and the design and implementation of a modular patient ward block at the CWM Hospital.
This engagement process will inform the construction market about the scope, scale, and execution of the PHIT investments, while also helping potential bidders better understand the project requirements prior to the formal procurement phase.
Upon completion, the PHIT Project is expected to significantly enhance Fiji’s healthcare capacity, improve access to specialized services, particularly cancer treatment, and bolster the resilience of health facilities throughout the nation. This initiative represents a substantial advancement in public health outcomes and reflects a dedication to fostering a healthier future for all Fijians.
