The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has taken strong measures in response to the illegal disposal of fish waste along Namosi Road, linked to a fish processing facility in Walu Bay. Investigations conducted by the MECC revealed that the company responsible was operating without a valid Waste Disposal Permit and had hired an unlicensed transporter to manage waste removal.

During a thorough inspection, officials discovered that the transporter had attempted to deliver the waste to the Naboro Landfill but was denied access due to improper packaging. Further inquiry, supported by landfill records and CCTV footage, confirmed that the same vehicle subsequently disposed of the waste unlawfully along Namosi Road.

The MECC acted swiftly to retrieve the dumped waste and returned it to the processing facility, which subsequently arranged for its proper disposal through a licensed waste operator at the Naboro Landfill. Due to these violations, the MECC intends to issue a Non-Compliance Notice to the company for operating without the appropriate permit and will initiate further enforcement actions concerning the illegal dumping under Section 45 of the Environment Management Act 2005.

Lynda Tabuya, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, condemned the illegal actions, reaffirming that such conduct is intolerable. “This conduct is unacceptable. Businesses are legally required to hold valid permits and to use licensed waste operators. Ignorance or convenience does not excuse unlawful dumping,” she stated. Tabuya further emphasized the risks that illegal waste disposal poses, including threats to public health, damage to compliant businesses, and environmental degradation. She reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to enforcing compliance and addressing these violations robustly.

The MECC has underscored the importance of adhering to environmental regulations, warning that breaches will trigger serious enforcement actions. The Ministry has also urged businesses and waste operators to comply with permit requirements and adopt effective waste management practices to ensure public safety and protect the environment.

This situation serves as a reminder of the critical need for responsible waste management and compliance with environmental laws to safeguard our communities and ecosystems. With continued efforts from the MECC and increased awareness among businesses, there is a hopeful outlook for improved environmental stewardship and reduced instances of illegal dumping in the future.
