Opposition Member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya has called for bipartisan collaboration to combat drug abuse in Fiji, stressing the urgency of addressing the nation’s escalating drug crisis. During a recent statement made in response to Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalarua, Koya underscored the need to empower the Counter-Narcotics Bureau, advocating for its independent operation free from bias to effectively tackle drug-related challenges, which he labeled a significant “scourge” afflicting Fijian society.
Acknowledging the severity of the drug crisis, Koya pointed out that support from international partners, notably the United Nations, is essential in confronting this grave issue. He emphasized the importance of enhancing legal frameworks, which would enable judges and magistrates to impose stricter sentences as deterrents for drug offenders. Koya articulated his perspective, stating, “One of the most important tools that any judge or magistrate will have will be the laws that we put in place… ensure that the laws are perfect so we can rid this scourge from our society.” This approach would send a strong message regarding the serious consequences faced by individuals engaging in drug activities.
Beyond enforcement and legal measures, Koya expressed concerns about aftercare and rehabilitation for individuals affected by substance abuse. He highlighted the increasing strain on institutions like St. Giles Hospital, which, he notes, are overwhelmed by a surge in drug-related cases, indicating a crucial need for a multifaceted response that includes both combating drug trafficking and providing support to those affected by addiction.
Moreover, Koya viewed the recent arrests of officers within the Counter-Narcotics Bureau as a promising indication that accountability mechanisms are working effectively within the system. He advocates for improved governance and oversight to enhance the Bureau’s role in the ongoing fight against drug abuse.
