As the Fijian Drua gears up for its fifth season in Super Rugby Pacific, Fiji Rugby Union Board Chair John Sanday expressed optimism about the ongoing partnership between the union and the franchise, noting that while things are proceeding steadily, there remains potential for further development.

The Drua has established itself as a significant asset in Fiji’s rugby landscape, offering a professional platform for emerging local talent aiming to reach higher levels in the sport, including opportunities with the Flying Fijians national team. This has solidified the franchise’s role as an essential part of the rugby pathway in Fiji.

Sanday mentioned that while expectations are rising, the structural arrangements governing the Drua impact how much the FRU can be involved. He highlighted that the framework established the previous year is functioning well but could be enhanced for additional synergy.

“Counter Ruck Limited is responsible for managing the Drua franchise, with a shareholding split of 49 percent for the FRU and 51 percent for the Fiji Government. This arrangement includes a relationship agreement designed to shield Counter Ruck from outside interferences,” Sanday explained. This structure aims to protect the franchise’s independence, particularly during tough periods in Fiji Rugby’s history.

Despite some limitations on interference, Sanday reaffirmed the FRU’s commitment to supporting the Drua, emphasizing its vital role in player development. He stated, “We support the franchise in whatever way we can, because it’s a pathway for our players and where they get some really seriously good exposure. It’s also a professional environment in which they can grow and develop.”

Additionally, he noted the financial stability provided by the franchise, allowing players to earn a more substantial income than what might typically be available in their situation. He expressed confidence that, although improvements are always needed, the partnership will continue to yield positive outcomes.

The Drua will soon face off against the Brumbies at 3:35 PM next Saturday in Ba, with fans able to catch the game live on FBC Sports. This match will be another opportunity for the franchise to showcase its talent and continue its growth within the professional rugby arena.
